National
Middle School Association Announces Name Change
to Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE)
WESTERVILLE, OH, August 26, 2011 — National Middle School Association announced
that it is changing its name to the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE).
The change was approved by a vote of association members after years of rigorous
research and review by committees and association stakeholders. The organization
has started to transition to the new name, which better represents the mission
of serving the field of middle level education, including teachers,
administrators, central office personnel, professors, students, and parents—all
who reach and teach students in grades 5 through 9.
According to President Joan Jarrett, “The new name better reflects and
strengthens the organization as a leading global educational organization. This
new name will help us serve the broader field of middle level education and
those who are passionate about improving the educational experiences of 10- to
15-year-olds.”
As part of a name change process, a transition logo and text will be used to
help identify that, though the organization has a new and more meaningful name,
it has the same mission “to improve the educational experiences of young
adolescents by providing vision, knowledge, and resources to all who serve them
in order to develop healthy, productive, and ethical citizens.”
Executive Director Dr. William Waidelich adds, “There has never been a better
time for this organization to fully embrace all who work to meet the educational
and developmental needs of young adolescents, regardless of school names or
grade configurations. Association for Middle Level Education is a name that
brings new opportunities for the association to reach more educators and
collaborate to improve the education of all young adolescents.”
About the Association for Middle Level Education formerly National Middle
School Association
The Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) is the premier association for
middle level education. With more than 25,000 members who are principals,
teachers, central office personnel, professors, college students, parents,
community leaders, and educational consultants around the globe, AMLE welcomes
and provides support to anyone engaged in the education and well-being of young
adolescents. AMLE offers information, resources, and professional development to
middle grades educators working to develop more effective schools that focus on
the success of every student. AMLE, 4151 Executive Parkway, Suite 300,

Middle Grades Play Pivotal Role in Dropout Prevention
New report illuminates importance of middle grades in
national goal of graduating all students ready for college, career, and civic
life
Based on more than a decade of research and development
work, "Putting Middle Grades Students on the Graduation Path: A Policy and
Practice Brief" illuminates the critical role the middle grades (grades 5
through 8) play in our national goal of graduating all students from high school
prepared for college, career, and civic life.
The report identifies four key components of a unified
middle grades improvement strategy and specific actions to increase academic
achievement and improve graduation rates. Additionally, the report lists three
major challenges to acting effectively on the insights generated by the
research.
