MAMSE HALL OF FAME

In recognition of outstanding contributions to those

who teach and learn at the middle level

The Michigan Association of Middle School Educators

hereby inducts

Dr. Thomas N. Barris

into the MAMSE HALL OF FAME

Dedicated, organized, collaborative, caring, creative and self assured are words used as a testimonial for granting Dr. Thomas N. Barris the Michigan Association of Middle School Educators Hall of Fame Award.

Dr. Barris has served the Michigan Association of Middle School Educators in many ways: Region 11 Board of Director 1988 – 90; President-Elect 1990 – 91, President 1991 – 92; Past President 1992 – 93; Associate Executive Director 1993 – 95; Executive Director 1995 – 2006.

He has a strong commitment to middle level youth and those adults who work to guide and teach them. He was responsive to the fiscal health of the organization by analyzing and monitoring the budget and recommending sound investment and spending strategies. He coordinated the planning of MAMSE's annual conferences attended by 700 - 1700 educators. He provided the MAMSE Board of Directors with the information needed to be a functioning policy board. As a presenter at national and state conferences, he shared his expertise about the components of exemplary middle schools. Under his leadership, MAMSE strengthened collaborative efforts with the National Middle School Association, Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals, Kellogg Foundation Middle Start Initiative, Central Michigan University Michigan Schools in the Middle Project, and the Michigan Education Association Middle Level Public Relations Project. His professionalism is exceptional.

Through these collaborative efforts, Dr. Barris showed his commitment to professional development at the state and national level. By influencing the educators in the classrooms in the state of Michigan via MAMSE programs and partnerships, Dr. Barris had the strong potential of impacting the lives of thousands of middle level youth, the profession and the community.

Dr. Barris was part of the golden age of middle schools. His dedication to advocating for middle level youth and those who serve them is appreciated and admired.
