MAMSE HALL OF FAME

In recognition of outstanding contributions to those

who teach and learn at the middle level

The MICHIGAN ASSOCIATION OF MIDDLE SCHOOL EDUCATORS

hereby inducts 

BLAINE GOODRICH

 into the MAMSE HALL OF FAME 

  The passion and commitment of Blaine Goodrich to students and staff “in the middle” has energized all who know him. His efforts to provide optimal advocacy, representation and service to those who teach and learn at the middle level are recognized statewide.
Blaine Goodrich has served the Michigan Association of Middle School Educators in many ways. Region 3 Board member 1994-2006, Legislative Committee chair, Life Member of MAMSE, MASSP liaison, and Executive Director 2006-2012. Blaine has mentored schools looking to implement middle level concepts, programs and practices. He has served on review panels for the MAMSE Journal, MAMSE Grants and MAMSE Awards. He has secured sponsorship monies for MAMSE programs. As a teacher, principal, curriculum director, school board member, Dean of Education and Human Services at Baker College, Blaine has always been an ambassador for the middle level.
He has a strong commitment to middle level youth and those adults who work to guide and teach them. He coordinated the planning of MAMSE's annual conferences attended by hundreds of educators. He provided the MAMSE Board of Directors with the information needed to be a functioning policy board. As a presenter at conferences, he shared his expertise about the components of exemplary middle schools. Under his leadership, MAMSE strengthened collaborative efforts with the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals, NCA, Save our Schools, Michigan Joint Education Conference, Schools to Watch, Michigan Association of School Boards, teacher education programs at various universities, private and independent schools, the state board of education, local boards of education and the state legislature.
Through these collaborative efforts, Blaine Goodrich showed his commitment to young adolescents. By influencing the educators in the classrooms in the state of Michigan via MAMSE programs and partnerships, Blaine Goodrich had the strong potential of impacting the lives of thousands of middle level youth, the profession and the community.
Blaine Goodrich was part of the golden age of middle schools. His dedication to advocating for middle level youth and those who serve them is appreciated and admired.

MAMSE HALL OF FAME

SUZANNE LAPPIN

 into the MAMSE HALL OF FAME 

    Suzanne Lappin is a well-known and respected middle level educator in Michigan. She is one of the leaders in the effort to offer professional development services to middle level educators in Michigan. As a past MAMSE Board member she has chaired the Regionalization, Consultant Services and Teacher Tips and Updates committees. Further, she has been a frequent conference presenter for MAMSE and NMSA and hosted a Region 6 drive in conference.
    She was a classroom teacher for Van Dyke Public Schools in Warren for many years and was instrumental in implementing teaming. Besides teaching full time, Suzanne was also involved with Central Michigan University’s Michigan Schools in the Middle project.
    Suzanne has mentored schools looking to implement middle level concepts, programs and practices. She has served on review panels for the MAMSE Journal, MAMSE Grants and MAMSE Awards. She has secured sponsorship monies for MAMSE programs.

Dr. Peggy Gaskill

 into the MAMSE HALL OF FAME

    Dedicated, organized, collaborative, caring, creative and self assured are words used as a testimonial for granting Dr. Peggy Gaskill the Michigan Association of Middle School Educators Hall of Fame Award.
    Dr. Peggy Gaskill is a well-known and respected middle level educator in Michigan and the nation. She is one of the leaders in the effort to institute a separate teaching certificate for middle level teachers, is a past-president, board member, conference chairperson, and frequent conference presenter for MAMSE.
    She was a faculty member at Central Michigan University and designed and implemented new middle level courses there. Education students have been inspired to teach at the middle level because of Dr. Gaskill's encouragement.
    Dr. Gaskill is responsible for acquiring a $905,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to implement the Michigan Schools in the Middle project to provide staff development for middle level educators and create the Center for Excellence in Middle Level Education, a major resource center for middle level educators in Michigan and the United States.
    Dr. Gaskill consults regularly with Michigan middle level educators who are interested in adopting middle level concepts, programs, and practices and has been instrumental in forming a group of college and university staff around the state interested in developing undergraduate and graduate middle level degree programs.
    Dr. Gaskill has served on the review panel for the National Middle School Association's Research in Middle level Education Journal, has been designated by NMSA as the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education Folio Review Coordinator, served on the NMSA Research Committee and the NMSA Foundation Board and has made presentations at NMSA annual conferences.
    Dr. Gaskill has impacted the lives of thousands of middle level youth, the profession and the community. She was part of the golden age of middle schools. Her dedication to advocating for middle level youth and those who serve them is appreciated and admired.

hereby inducts

Dr. Thomas N. Barris

into the MAMSE HALL OF FAME

Dedicated, organized, collaborative, caring, creative and self assured are words used as a testimonial for granting Dr. Thomas N. Barris the Michigan Association of Middle School Educators Hall of Fame Award.

Dr. Barris has served the Michigan Association of Middle School Educators in many ways: Region 11 Board of Director 1988 – 90; President-Elect 1990 – 91, President 1991 – 92; Past President 1992 – 93; Associate Executive Director 1993 – 95; Executive Director 1995 – 2006.

He has a strong commitment to middle level youth and those adults who work to guide and teach them. He was responsive to the fiscal health of the organization by analyzing and monitoring the budget and recommending sound investment and spending strategies. He coordinated the planning of MAMSE's annual conferences attended by 700 - 1700 educators. He provided the MAMSE Board of Directors with the information needed to be a functioning policy board. As a presenter at national and state conferences, he shared his expertise about the components of exemplary middle schools. Under his leadership, MAMSE strengthened collaborative efforts with the National Middle School Association, Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals, Kellogg Foundation Middle Start Initiative, Central Michigan University Michigan Schools in the Middle Project, and the Michigan Education Association Middle Level Public Relations Project. His professionalism is exceptional.

Through these collaborative efforts, Dr. Barris showed his commitment to professional development at the state and national level. By influencing the educators in the classrooms in the state of Michigan via MAMSE programs and partnerships, Dr. Barris had the strong potential of impacting the lives of thousands of middle level youth, the profession and the community.
